Badgers pick up the pace in spring ball

MADISON – One question about the 2023 Wisconsin Badgers Football team appears to have been answered very early in spring camp.

This is going to be a team that works fast.

Few reporters assembled Tuesday at the Dave McClain Center ever recalled – at Wisconsin or anywhere else – a more frenetic football practice. Motion was constant, standing around was nearly nonexistent.

When the “ones” were working toward the west end zone, the twos were working the opposite way. An air horn signaled when one session was over and the next began. Unlike most football practices, the air horn did not mean to make your way over to your next assigned station at your pace, but rather the pace of new coach Luke Fickell, who has been described by those that know him best as “high energy.”

Fickell is only available to the media on Saturdays but said after this past weekend’s opening practice that he was happy with how his team has come out of the gates in spring ball.

“We were able to get everything in that we had down,” said Fickell. “That’s the pace, that’s the tempo that we train ourselves for. They did a great job with the effort and the attitude. They did a great job competing with each other.”

And while Fickell has downplayed who has won what starting job, particularly when queried about the quarterback position, it appears SMU transfer senior Tanner Mordecai will exit camp as a clear No. 1 on the depth chart.
