Wisconsin-Nebraska football game 'in jeopardy' per report

Coronavirus has already had great impacts on the college football season, the Big Ten, and the University of Wisconsin.

In addition to the news that Wisconsin would be down two more quarterbacks for Saturday's game at Nebraska, Jeff Potrykus of the Journal-Sentinel reported Tuesday that the Badgers' game itself is now in jeopardy of being canceled.

Potrykus reported Tuesday that the reason for the cancellation is that the Badgers are close to the Big Ten's measurement on positive test rates that would force a pause of football activities.

According to CBS Sports, three dozen college football games have been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, although none so far in the Big Ten, as it began play only a few days ago.

Because of the Big Ten's nine-games-in-nine-weeks schedule, there is no room to make up games that can't be played on their scheduled date. If the game on Saturday is cancelled, it won't be made up, at least according to the current timeframe.

Reports of a potential cancellation came on a day in which the state of Wisconsin reported its highest-ever single-day numbers for positive tests, hospitalizations, and deaths due to coronavirus.

Individual players who have a confirmed case of COVID-19 must sit out 21 days from the first positive test upon diagnosis, according to the Big Ten's coronavirus policy. So far, only quarterback Graham Mertz has been confirmed as a positive case, although the school can't and won't name other players who have tested positive for coronavirus, as stated by Paul Chryst during Monday's media availability, as well as an interview on 1310 WIBA in Madison. Chryst stated during the media availability that he felt 'confident' that Saturday's game at Nebraska would be played.

As of Tuesday night, the Wisconsin football game was still on as scheduled, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday across the Badgers Sports Network and on iHeartRadio in Milwaukee, Madison, and Eau Claire.
