Packers Prime: The 1996 NFC Championship Game

“A hole you could drive a truck to the Super Bowl through”

There are so many ways to convey a special moment. It had been 29 long, agonizing years since the Green Bay Packers played in football’s ultimate showcase, but as the Wolf-Holmgren-Favre triumvirate hit its apex during the 1996 season, there was one final stop on this team of destiny’s road back to claim the trophy named for their famed late, legendary coach.

But how to encapsulate the pure joy felt across Packers Nation?

The weather at Lambeau Field on this January day was a frigid 3 degrees Fahrenheit (-13 with the wind chill factor), but don’t tell that to anyone who witnessed the Packers systematic demolition of the outmanned and outmatched Carolina Panthers, 30-13.

As running back Edgar Bennett iced it (no pun intended) with a 4-yard run in the third quarter to give Green Bay a commanding two-touchdown lead, legendary radio play-by-play man Jim Irwin rose to the occasion with one of the most iconic calls of his Hall of Fame career, “Edgar Bennett, with a hole on the right side that you could drive a truck to the Super Bowl through!”

Relive the 1996 NFC Championship game Sunday at noon on your new home for Packers Football, 97.3 The Game!
