Packers Select Georgia DL Devonte Wyatt With The 28th Pick In The NFL Draft

Despite the pleas of a majority of Packers fans, GM Brian Gutekunst again decided not to select a wide receiver in the first round. After selecting Georgia LB Quay Walker with the 22nd pick, Gutekunst goes back to that National Championship Georgia defense by selecting defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt with the 28th overall selection.

Wyatt represents great value at this point in the draft as many had him pegged to go much earlier. Wyatt is the best 3-technique lineman in the draft and he'll help beef up the Packers defensive lineman that badly needed more depth down the stretch in 2021. Wyatt is 6'3" and 315 pounds and can cause disruptions and became first-team All-SEC in 2021 en route to a national championship title for the Bulldogs. He has some speed to his game as well, especially for a big guy. He ran the 40 yard dash in 4.77 seconds and has good lateral quickness.

The Packers have reportedly liked Wyatt for a while and were happy to select him at 28 overall and could've even taken him at 22 if they wanted to.

In the five picks in between the Packers selection at 22 and then again at 28, two offensive linemen went off the board as well as a cornerback, a linebacker, and an edge rusher.

Wide receiver is still the need that's garnering all the attention for the Packers but the additions of Walker and now Wyatt will beef up that defense. Heading into the second round, where the Packers have two selections, there are a bunch of good wide receiver options on the board as well as some edge rushers and safeties that could fill areas of need as well. After not making a single trade in the first round, Gutekunst may have to trade up in the second round if he wants one of those wide receivers. But trading up there will cost less than a trade up would've in the first round.
