Three players to watch for the Packers to acquire late in camp

Green Bay has acquired players late in camp after final countdowns the past two seasons, and could be looking again for a late addition in 2019. Here are three young, athletic players that Packers fans should keep an eye on as training camp progresses.

Maggie Loney of Cheesehead TV identifies a trio of young players that for one reason or another could become available late in camp, and could be an interesting player for the Packers to pursue.

  • Quinton Bell (Oakland), Linebacker: Bell was a seventh-round pick by the Raiders in this year’s draft. The linebacker ran a 4.53 40-yard dash at his pro day and posted an 11’4” broad jump. As a prospect, he’s on the raw side, but the potential might entice someone to pick him up should he be released by the Raiders.
  • Obi Melifonwu (New England), Safety: a second-round draft pick by the Raiders in 2017. The 6-4 safety prospect was released by the Raiders in October of that same year, and remained on the open market for a few weeks until being signed by the Patriots on a two-year, $1.4 million contract. Melifonwu has barely seen the field during his time in New England, and he could be the odd man out in a crowded secondary.
  • Alex Barnes (Tennessee), Running Back: Barnes is one of six running backs on the Titans’ 90-man roster, which could make him a casualty on cut-down day. At 6-1, 225lbs, Barnes is a bit bigger than Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. Barnes’ relative athletic score (RAS) was 9.81 at the NFL Combine. His 34 reps on the bench press gave him 9.99 for that category.
