Packers loading up on running backs

With the additions of Corey Grant and Darrin Hall in the first week of training camp, it's clear the Green Bay Packers are looking for some competition at the running back position ahead of the 2019 season.

There are now six running backs on the 90-player roster for training camp with the two recent additions. Brandon Carwile of Cheesehead TV notes that Aaron Jones doesn't have anything to worry about as the primary back, but that the competition for the reserve roles will be something to watch in camp, with Jamaal Williams also in the mix:

In April, the team drafted Dexter Williams in the sixth round... then on Friday, the Packers signed Corey Grant out of free agency. The very next day, the Packers claimed Darrin Hall, who was a recent camp casualty from the Cincinnati Bengals. And then there's Tra Carson, who spent much of last season on the practice squad. Clearly, the coaching staff wants to have a well-rounded group with perhaps the goal of keeping the top three or four guys.

Speaking of Grant, Ross Uglem of Cheesehead TV details the history between Grant and his former coach, Nathaniel Hackett, who is now the Packers' offensive coordinator. In the 2017 AFC Championship, Grant was the focal point of a game plan designed to take down the vaunted New England Patriots:

One of the key components Hackett came up with was a package of plays designed to get running back/kick returner Corey Grant. Grant had run the ball just 30 times over the course of the season and caught just three passes. Grant may not even be a likely player to make the roster, but it's clear Hackett and Lafleur have seen something they like in the speedster.

Grant finished the game with three catches for 59 yards.
