ESPN: Packers' IR designation of Aaron Rodgers violated NFL rules

According to ESPN, several NFL teams have pointed out that the Packers violated NFL rules regarding injured reserve. From Adam Schefter's article at ESPN.com:

NFL rules stipulate that a player needs to have suffered a new injury that would sideline him at least six weeks to be placed on injured reserve.

The violations carry a pretty steep punishment, again from the article:

If Rodgers didn't suffer a new injury but was placed back on injured reserve anyway, NFL rules stipulate that the Packers would have to release him.

The article points out that nobody expects Rodgers to be cut, and that the Packers are declining comment.
