For the first time in over a decade, the Monticello Ponies are league champs.
Monticello won 83-30 over Albany on Friday night, clinching the Six Rivers East Conference championship outright.
"It hasn't been done in my time here," said Monticello coach Mark Olson, in his 11th year with the school.
With the conference title wrapped up, the Ponies also end a four-year run of titles by Barneveld in the conference.
"From where these guys started," said Olson, citing the four wins just three seasons ago, when the current group of seniors were freshmen, "I couldn't be more proud of our team this year so far."
Behind 16 points each from Peter Gustafson and Reece Rufer, as well as a season-high 10 points from Tristin Flanagan, the game was never in question.
Monticello raced out to a 13-0 lead and led at one point 23-2. The Ponies owned a 49-11 advantage going into the locker room.
Albany, starting two sophomores and a freshman, showed plenty of fight in the loss, but were overwhelmed by the depth and talent of the fourth-ranked team in Division 5.
"I know it's a loss, but we got better tonight," said Albany coach Derek Allen after the game. "There was no quit in our guys."
Rob Schroeder had nine points to pace the Comets, who have two games each of the next two weeks, including a match-up with rival Juda and a home game against Barneveld to close out the regular season.
For Monticello, they still have two big league battles to play, but they'll be spaced out a bit, with Black Hawk coming up Thursday and Pecatonica the following Thursday. Albany will play Monday against Parkview, who they co-op with in football.
