WIAA Cancels Spring Sports Seasons, Tournament Series

It wasn't exactly surprising news, but the disappointment felt by coaches, players, fans, and others around the state was real.

At Tuesday's WIAA Board of Control meeting, the WIAA voted to cancel the spring sports season, as well as the associated tournaments and championships for those sports, due to restrictions placed by the recent update to the Safer At Home order in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin's new Safer At Home order extends through May 26, but also closed schools for the remainder of the academic year, which ends June 30. No WIAA State Tournament plays beyond June, so with the closure of schools, extracurricular activities, and organized team sports, there was no way for spring sports to continue.

Most of the discussion at the Board of Control meeting then turned to virtual instruction for spring sports athletes, which will continue through each sport's respective state tournament dates, as well as the possibility of having 30 summer contact days provided those fall in line with government orders.

No announcements were made in regards to fall sports, which are scheduled to begin on time for now.
