Rare Blown Save For Williams Gives Cubs 4-3 Win Over Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers bullpen has been one of the best in the league all season and that wasn't any different on Wednesday night, until the ninth inning. The Brewers bullpen combined for three shutout innings, before Devin Williams blew his second save of the season by allowing three runs in the ninth inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 3-1 win over the Brewers.

To start, Adrian Houser was solid for the Brewers on the mound. He threw five innings and allowed just one run. When he left, the game was tied at one.

Hoby Milner pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and the Brewers immediately took the lead. Willy Adames hit his thirteenth home run of the season to give Milwaukee a 2-1 lead. They added another run later in the inning when Brian Anderson knocked in a run with a single. The Brewers led 3-1.

Milner, J.C. Mejia and Joel Payamps combined for three scoreless outings, and Milwaukee held a 3-1 heading into the ninth inning.

Devin Williams had only blown one save all season entering Wednesday night, but that stat would not hold. He allowed some soft contact to put two runners on base for Chicago. With two outs, Mike Tauchman hit a two-RBI double to tie the game at three. A throwing error by Brian Anderson gave Chicago the lead on a routine ground ball to third base. Hear from Devin Williams below.

Milwaukee couldn't score in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Cubs won 4-3.

Milwaukee is 46-41. They will try to earn a split in the series on Thursday afternoon at 1:10pm at American Family Field.
