The road trip is over and the Milwaukee Brewers come back home four games better than they were when they took off for Cleveland ten days ago. Milwaukee went 7-3 over the ten game stretch. They won every series of the road trip, including over the weekend in Pittsburgh.
The Brewers were one out away from a sweep of the Pirates. On Friday night, Matt Bush gave up three runs in the ninth inning to Pittsburgh, and the Brewers lost 8-7. Bush was designated for assignment on Saturday morning as a result.
On Saturday, the Brewers offense was the story. They scored eleven runs, and had a 10-0 lead in the sixth inning. Corbin Burnes took a perfect game into the sixth inning as well. A six-run eighth inning for Pittsburgh cut the Brewers lead to 11-8. But after a short rain delay, Joel Payamps slammed the door for the save and the Brewers earned an 11-8 win.
Sunday was the rubber match of the series. The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an early home run in the second inning, but the Brewers answered right away. William Contreras hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead. That score remained until the Brewers added two big runs in the eighth inning on a throwing error on a Brice Turang ground ball. Pittsburgh got one run against Elvis Peguero in the eighth inning, but Devin Williams earned his 17th save of the season in the ninth inning to give Milwaukee the series with a 6-3 win.
Milwaukee is 45-39 heading into the last seven games before the All-Star break. They open a series against the Chicago Cubs at American Family Field on Monday afternoon at 1:10pm.
