The Milwaukee Brewers are looking for tomorrow’s stars in the 2023 MLB Draft. The first round of the Draft will take place on Sunday, July 9 in Seattle. Milwaukee will be selecting 18th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, but they will also have the 33rd overall pick in the draft because of the Competitive Balance Round A.

The Brewers have some interesting prospects to choose from with both selections, but let’s focus on the 18th overall pick. Who are some of the potential prospects that they could be selecting from with that selection?

Matt Shaw (SS – Maryland)

Matt Shaw is 21 years old and has played shortstop throughout most of his collegiate career. He is ranked as the 18th-best prospect in the 2023 MLB Draft, according to MLB.com. Shortstop is the one position you can never have enough of in the organization. The Milwaukee Brewers scout and develop well.

Shaw rarely strikes out and draws a lot of walks. He can play other positions in the field and could be suited for second base in the long run. He bats from the right side of the plate and is also a righty fielder.

Hurston Waldrep (RHP – Florida)

Hurston Waldrep is the 20th-ranked prospect in the 2023 MLB Draft prospect, according to MLB.com. He would be a great selection for the Milwaukee Brewers organization because they can use some more pitching depth in the Minor Leagues. They have a little bit of an older pitching staff in the Majors and will need to develop some more pitching in the Minors.

Waldrep pitched at Southern Miss before transferring to Florida, and is 21 years old. He is a right-handed pitcher and started out in the bullpen before moving into the starting rotation. When Waldrep became a starting pitcher at Southern Miss before coming to Florida, he struck out 14 per nine innings and led them to the Super Regionals. His fastball reaches the high 90s and his slider reaches the high 80s, but will need some work on his command and control.

Bryce Eldridge (1B, RHP – Madison)

Bryce Eldridge is the 21st-ranked prospect in the 2023 MLB Draft prospect, according to MLB.com. The Milwaukee Brewers don’t have any top prospects at the first base position in their farm system and they need a first baseman in their farm system badly. Bryce Eldridge is just 18 years old and was a two-way player in high school. It appears as if he will be a hitter at the next level, rather than pitching.

Eldridge is a right-handed fielder and is also a left-handed batter. He has some power and leverage to his swing. The Milwaukee Brewers could potentially view him as a middle-of-the-order hitter. He has committed to playing baseball at the University of Alabama, but it would be interesting to see if he could skip college to go straight to the Minor Leagues. Bryce Eldridge has a strong enough arm that he could also be a right fielder in the future for any organization.
