Brewers Gain Ground with Doubleheader Sweep of Giants

The best possible scenario played out on Thursday for the Brewers. They won both games, the Phillies lost, and the Cardinals lost. The Padres didn’t play so the Brewers gained a full game on them as well. But none of it would’ve been possible without the exceptional pitching by Milwaukee in their sweep of the Giants.

In the first game, the Brewers beat the Giants 2-1. Corbin Burnes struck out 14 batters over eight innings and allowed just one run. Devin Williams slammed the door in the ninth inning and the Brewers won the first game.

In the second game, the Brewers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. However, the pitching plan didn’t pan out in game two as Freddy Peralta had to exit in the third inning. Craig Counsell said after the game that Peralta has been feeling fatigue and will go on the IL.

The bullpen picked up Freddy Peralta by throwing 7 innings and allowed just two runs. Boxberger gave up a run and Matt Bush gave up a solo home run to Joc Pederson, but that was it for the Giants offense.

Garrett Mitchell added an RBI double in the sixth inning to get the Brewers their fourth run.

Taylor Rogers earned the save in the ninth inning and the Brewers won game two 4-2.

The Brewers are 2.5 games behind the Phillies for the last wild card spot in the NL and 8 games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central. They gained 1.5 games on both teams on Thursday.

The Brewers will start a three-game weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds in Milwaukee on Friday night at 7:10pm. Listen to the Realty Executives Baseball Postgame Show with Tim Allen immediately following the game.
