Brewers Bats Catch Fire in 9-7 Win Over Cubs

The Brewers need every win they can get down the stretch and this weekend could be a start. They scored seven or more runs in back-to-back games for the first time in over a month and concluded their season series against the Cubs with a 9-5 win.

The Cubs got out to an early lead with runs in the first and second inning. Chicago led 2-0 after two innings.

In the bottom of the third inning, Hunter Renfroe hit a two-out double to right field to score Willy Adames and get the Brewers on the board. That would be the last full inning the Brewers would be losing in the game.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Brewers bats came alive. Garrett Mitchell, who was called up from the minor leagues on Saturday and was making his first start on Sunday, singled to center field to score two runs and give the Brewers a 3-2 lead. It was Mitchell’s first hit in the major leagues.

Christian Yelich immediately followed with a two-run home run to extend the Brewers lead to 5-2. It was Yelich’s 11th home run of the season and second of the weekend.

Nico Hoerner got the Cubs back in the game in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run home run. That cut the Brewers lead to 5-4. However, that one run Brewers lead didn’t last long.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kolten Wong hit a two-run home run. It was his 10th of the season and second of the weekend. That gave the Brewers a 7-4 lead.

The Brewers loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored two more runs. Hunter Renfroe and Keston Hiura hit RBI singles in the inning. The Brewers led 9-4 after six innings.

Yan Gomes hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Franmil Reyes from third base in the top of the seventh inning, to cut the Cubs deficit to 9-5.

Hoby Milner pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Brad Boxberger gave up a two-run home run to Franmil Reyes to cut the Brewers lead to 9-7. Devin Williams came in to the game and slammed the door. He got three outs on eight pitches.

The Brewers beat the Cubs 9-7. The Brewers now lead the all-time series between the two teams 209-208.

The Brewers will try to win their third game in a row on Monday night when they open a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at American Family Field at 7:10pm.
