Brewers Slug Their Way To Doubleheader Sweep Over Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers swept their Memorial Day doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs, winning the matinee 7-6 and then the nightcap by a score of 3-1.

Milwaukee's top pitching prospect Ethan Small made his MLB debut in Game 1, cruising through the first two innings before running into trouble in the third and getting removed from the game. He left with a 2-1 deficit but the Brewers were able to answer right back with a Keston Hiura RBI single. After back to back homers by the Cubs in the bottom of the 4th, Tyrone Taylor hit a two run homer to tie the game back up in the 6th.

The next inning, Luis Urias slugged a three run homer to give Milwaukee a 7-4 lead and those seven runs would be enough to hold on as Devin Williams and Josh Hader closed out the final two innings to secure a 7-6 victory.

In the nightcap, it was the Aaron Ashby show. Ashby dominated for six innings, scattering just five hits and striking out 12, a career high for him. He went out for the 7th inning but ran into some trouble after three soft singles and he left a bases loaded, no out jam for Brad Boxberger. Boxberger got a strikeout and then a double play ball to end the inning without a run scoring to preserve the Brewers 2-1 lead.

That lead came from a Rowdy Tellez double in the 4th and a Victor Caratini homer in the 5th. Tyrone Taylor would again add some insurance with a solo home run in the 8th inning to make it a 3-1 lead. Boxberger closed out the 8th inning as well and then Josh Hader came in for his second save opportunity of the day and he converted that one as well, securing the doubleheader sweep for Milwaukee.

Between the two games, the Brewers hit five home runs on the day to help win both games of this doubleheader.

Next up, the Brewers and Cubs play Tuesday night with Eric Lauer (5-1, 2.31 ERA) on the mound for the Crew against Justin Steele (1-5, 5.40 ERA) for Chicago.
