A tale as old as time. Corbin Burnes was his usual, electric self on the mound. He went 6.2 scoreless IP, scattering just two hits and striking out 11. He left with the Brewers holding on to a 1-0 lead. The offense put together very little against a San Francisco Giants pitching staff that was using a 'bullpen day'.
Craig Counsell went to his bullpen but with Devin Williams and Josh Hader both unavailable today after pitching multiple days in a row in Philadelphia, Trevor Gott was the choice for the 8th inning.
In the 8th inning, with a man on, Joc Pederson came to bat and he faced some very loud heckling from the Brewers fans sitting behind home plate. Pederson answered back with a mammoth two run homer off the scoreboard in centerfield to silence the crowd and even fired his own shots back at the fans.
However in the bottom of the 8th, Willy Adames responded and let his bat do the talking, crushing a solo shot to the Brewers bullpen to tie the game up at 2.
In the 9th, with Hader unavailable, Counsell turned to Jake Cousins. He got the first two outs, but then allowed a walk and then a home run to Luis Gonzalez to give San Francisco a 4-2 lead. Camilo Doval came in and quickly shut down the Brewers in the bottom of the ninth to get the save.
Burnes was sharp and did everything he could, but the bullpen couldn't keep the shutout intact, especially with the top guys down and the offense simply couldn't get enough going once again.
