Corbin Burnes made an early exit, and the Milwaukee Brewers lost 4-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday in the first game of a pivotal regular season-ending five-game series.
Burnes left in the fourth inning with a back injury, having allowed three runs on six hits before giving way to the bullpen.
Milwaukee's offense managed nine hits, but could only put together two runs in losing their second straight game to fall one game back of the San Francisco Giants for the final Wild Card spot in the National League and two games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second NL Central playoff spot.
A double-header is on tap for Friday as Milwaukee will "host" the first game at St. Louis and be the road team for the second game.
