Brewers fans will have to wait a little longer for Milwaukee's home opener.
MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported early Friday morning that Friday's Milwaukee Brewers home opener against the St. Louis Cardinals has been postponed due to a positive coronavirus test.
The postponement was because members of the Cardinals tested positive for coronavirus, according to Heyman.
Milwaukee and St. Louis were scheduled to play a three-game weekend series, but for now, the first game of that stretch is now postponed due to the positive tests.
Earlier this week, the Miami Marlins had widespread positive coronavirus tests, prompting the postponement of several games involving the Marlins, the Phillies, and teams scheduled to play them. Miami's season is suspended.
UPDATE: The Brewers and Cardinals will play Saturday at 6:10 p.m. at Miller Park provided no further positive tests are collected from either team. Friday's game will be made up on Sunday as part of a double-header, according to Major League Baseball.
David Stearns, the general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, issued a statement on Friday:
“We are supportive of Major League Baseball’s decision to postpone today’s game and look forward to playing our home opener as soon as conditions safely allow. The health and safety of our players and employees are, and will continue to be, our top priorities." David Stearns, President - Baseball Operations and General Manager.
Milwaukee is 3-3 to start the 60-game 2020 MLB season.
