Brewers hold off Reds 4-2 Tuesday; Magic Number is 1

After holding off Cincinnati on Tuesday 4-2, the Milwaukee Brewers have a Magic Number of just 1 after Chicago lost their seventh game in a row.

In the game itself, the key moment was the ninth inning, when Josh Hader fended off a pair of two-out hits to end the game with a big save and a big win for the surging Brewers, now on a five-game win streak. Adrian Houser, Brent Suter, and Drew Pomeranz combined for eight innings of six-hit, two-run ball in the victory. Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee.

In the standings, Milwaukee can eliminate both the Cubs and Mets with a win in any of their remaining five games, holding a five-game lead over both squads after play Tuesday night. Milwaukee also is still a few games back of St. Louis for the division title.

In the Wild Card race, the Brewers are a full game behind Washington with five games to play. If the Brewers can tie the Nationals in the standings at year's end, they would host the Wild Card game at Miller Park between the teams.
