The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired third baseman Mike Moustakas from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Brett Phillips and right-handed pitcher Jorge López. The announcement was made by General Manager David Stearns.
"We are excited to bring Mike into our organization," said Stearns. "Through this deadline period, we have prioritized adding an impact bat to our lineup, and Mike provides just that."
Moustakas, 29, batted .249 with 20 HR and 62 RBI in 98 games with Kansas City this season. He made 96 starts, coming at third base (75g), designated hitter (17g) and first base (4g). He has produced 20+ home runs for the fourth time (also 2012, 2015 and 2017). His 38 homers last season marked a franchise record. His 49 home runs as a third basean since last season rank third in the Major Leagues, trailing only the Rockies’ Nolan Arenado (63) and new teammate Travis Shaw (50).
The 2015 World Series champion and two-time All-Star (2015 and 2017) owns a career batting average of .251 with 139 HR and 441 RBI in 934 games, all with Kansas City. After missing most of the 2016 season due to right thumb and right leg injuries, Moustakas returned last season to earn American League Comeback Player of the Year, batting .272 with 38 HR and 85 RBI in 148 games.
Phillips, 24, spent most of this season at Triple-A Colorado Springs (71g, .240, 6hr, 25rbi, 11sb). He also had three stints with Milwaukee this season, appearing in 15 games (.182, 0hr, 4rbi).
López, 25, also spent most of this season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he made 24 relief appearances (3-3, 5.65era, 5sv). He also had six stints with Milwaukee this season, appearing in 10 games out of the bullpen (0-1, 2.75era).
