After the first round of the AmFam Championship at University Ridge, Madison native Jerry Kelly leads his hometown event after shooting a seven-under 65, one stroke better than David Frost and two ahead of a group that includes tournament host Steve Stricker.
Neither Kelly nor Stricker have ever won the AmFam Championship.
Stricker's group that is tied for third includes David Toms and 2016 AmFam champion Kirk Triplett. Defending champion and Schwab Cup leader Scott McCarron is six strokes back at one-under.
Former major league pitcher John Smoltz shot a four-over 76.
Round two of the three-day event will begin Saturday morning.
