In a battle of the top two teams in the Badger Conference, the Cap City Cougars and Rock County Fury skated to a 0-0 draw in Beloit on Thursday night in high school girls hockey.
In the first period, Rock County peppered the goal with shots and controlled the puck for most of the periods. The Fury couldn't connect on a power play opportunity midway through the first, and settled for a scoreless tie at the end of one.
A late first-period penalty gave Cap City 91 seconds of a power play to start the second, but the Cougars couldn't solve freshman netminder Olivia Cronin on any of three power plays in the second period. Cap City also committed two penalties during the second period, with 41 seconds of four-on-four hockey midway through the frame. The game was still scoreless after two.
In the third period, the Fury got two power play chances, one with 3:07 left in the third period, but Jenna Jager and the Cougars defense turned Rock County away at every opportunity. In overtime, the Cougars charged hard at the Fury net, putting six shots on goal in the eight-minute extra session, but Rock County held on to preserve the scoreless tie.
Both teams will remain tied atop the Badger Conference at 2-0-1 and will meet again on January 31 at Sun Prairie.
