How the Football-Only Conference Proposal Affects Area Teams

Today, the WFCA released a proposal for football-only conference realignment to begin in 2020. Here's how it affects the area teams and conferences.

Big Eight

It's pretty straightforward. Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker simply exit to join the Badger South. That leaves an eight-team conference with the four Madison schools, Sun Prairie, Middleton, Verona, and Beloit Memorial. This would allow for two non-conference games each season.

Badger North and Badger South

The Badger North wouldn't change. The Badger South, however, would have Edgewood and Monroe leave to join the re-constituted Rock Valley, while adding in the two largest schools in the conference out of the Big Eight, Janesville Parker and Janesville Craig. Per the proposal, the conference could continue to have crossover games.

Rock Valley

Currently a 10-team conference, the Rock Valley would see some significant upheaval. First, Monroe and Edgewood would be added in, and would join existing members McFarland, Jefferson, Evansville/Albany, East Troy, Whitewater, and Edgerton. Edgewood would be the smallest member of the conference. Meanwhile, the four exiled members of the league would become part of the redone "Capitol 2" conference, joining existing Capitol North members Lodi, Lake Mills, Columbus, and Lakeside Lutheran. Because it would be an eight-team conference, this would allow for two non-conference games.

Capitol North and Capitol South (Capitol 1 and 2 in the proposal)

Here's where we see the largest changes so far. As mentioned above, Big Foot, Turner, Brodhead/Juda, and Clinton would join Lodi, Lake Mills, Columbus, and Lakeside Lutheran to form the Capitol 2. In the Capitol 1, current Capitol North member Luther Prep moves over to join existing Capitol South members Marshall and Waterloo, as well as five members of the current Trailways Large: Horicon/Hustisford, Palmyra-Eagle, Dodgeland, Markesan, and Pardeeville.

In addition, Belleville and Cambridge get sent to the SWAL out of the Capitol South, and Poynette leaves the Capitol North to go to the South Central Conference (where they played previous to joining the Capitol). Finally, New Glarus/Monticello would join the Southwest Conference, leaving the Capitol South.
