Goaltender Dryden McKay and the Madison Capitols shutout the Green Bay Gamblers, 4-0. in preseason play at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton on Friday night.
Madison (1-0-0-0) is in first place in the Eastern Conference with two preseason points. Green Bay (0-1-0-0) is tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with zero points.
Defenseman Connor Mayer opened up the scoring with an unassisted power play goal at 18:32 of the opening frame. Picking up a loose puck and finding himself alone in the slot, Mayer snapped a wrist shot that beat Gamblers goaltender Jake Begley to give the Capitols a one-goal advantage, all they would need en route to the victory.
Capitols veteran left wing Mick Messner doubled the lead to 2-0 at 8:17 of the second period. Skating into the offensive zone, left wing T.J. Sagissor took the puck to the right face-off circle. Sagissor flipped the puck back into the slot for a streaking Messner, who connected on a one-timer that found the back of the net.
Right wings Vincent de May and Konur Peterson each netted unassisted goals minutes apart to help Madison jump out to a 4-0 lead to close out the second period. De May broke up a Gamblers pass in the offensive zone and tallied a power play goal at 14:41 of the period, while Peterson finished off the scoring minutes later at 18:34.
