UW Hockey: Trent Frederic earns Big Ten second star

Following a pair of two-goal games this past weekend against Michigan, Trent Frederic was tabbed as the Big Ten's second star of the week.

The freshman scored UW's opening goal on Friday night about 10 minutes through the first period, and then added the eventual game-winning goal halfway through the third period to put the Badgers up 3-2 in a 5-2 victory.

The following evening, Frederic tallied the fastest goal in UW history, finding the back of the net just eight seconds into the contest. The St. Louis, Missouri native scored later in the first period on a short-handed breakaway to tie the game at 2-2.

Producing back-to-back games with more than one point, the 19-year-old forward now has five multi-point games in his last six contests played.

This is the second time this season that Frederic has earned the second star of the week, last earning the award on Oct. 18 for his four-point weekend against Boston College at the Kohl Center.

Currently in second on the team in total points with 30, the forward is second in the Big Ten and third in the nation in points-per-game among freshmen, totaling 1.36 points-per-contest. That average is good for 12th among all skaters nationally.

Frederic also holds a share of the national lead with five short-handed points.

Frederic was sandwiched between two Minnesota players on the weekly awards list, with forward Rem Pitlick taking the top spot while Justin Kloos was given third-star honors.

All three players will face off this week as the Badgers head to Minneapolis to take on the Gophers in the second Border Battle of the season. First place in the Big Ten is on the line for the Badgers as they sit in second place and just three points behind Minnesota with six conference games left.

Friday's game will start at 7 p.m. CT and will air on Fox Sports Wisconsin Plus, BTN2Go and will be available on the radio on WIBA-AM 1310 and the Badgers Sports Network. Saturday's matchup will also begin at 7 p.m. CT and will be televised on Fox Sports Wisconsin, BTN2Go and on the radio on WIBA-AM 1310 and the Badgers Sports Network.
