MADISON, Wis.—For the second time in the month of January, the Wisconsin men's hockey team has two players on the Big Ten's Three Stars of the Week list. Cameron Hughes took the top spot this week while Matthew Freytag claimed the second star.
Hughes was tied for the Big Ten lead with three points this past weekend, including a goal and two assists, as the Badgers swept Ohio State. The Edmonton, Alberta native netted the game-winning goal in overtime on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
The junior forward also registered the lone and primary assist on Freytag's game-winning goal on Thursday in Columbus. Hughes is currently on a career-high six-game point streak, scoring three goals and recording four assists over that time frame.
This is the second time Hughes has been featured on the weekly awards list and the first time this season.
This week's second star, Matthew Freytag, netted the game-winning goal on Thursday night at Ohio State, scoring 8:46 into the first period to give the Badgers a 2-0 lead. He also registered a goal in the third period on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden to give the Badgers another 2-0 edge.
The Wayzata, Minn. native led the conference with nine shots on goal on the weekend. It is the sophomore forwards' first career weekly award.
